Musician, photographer and designer Jimmy Edgar is a wayward star-child streaking across the cosmic dance-floor. Endowed with a supernatural feel for futuristic funk, the Detroit native has been bleeping and grinding about the Milky Way since he was a teenage humanoid. While his peers were worrying about their grades and popularity, Edgar was spinning alongside his hometown's DJ heroes and programming intricate beats that were unquestionably interplanetary communication disguised as dance music.   Since his start in 2001 at the tender age of 18,  Jimmy Edgar has released music on Warp Records and Moongadget.  "XXX” is exactly as the name suggest, sexy. Following their award-winning collaboration with Ethio jazz Godfather Mulatu Astatke pioneering UK collective The Heliocentrics resurfaces alongside another fascinating jazz enigma, ethno-musicologist, jazz maestro and multi-instrumentalist, Lloyd Miller!   Learning various instruments and immersing himself in New Orleans jazz through his father, a professional clarinet player, Lloyd Miller first trained himself in the styles of George Lewis and Jimmy Giuffre and cut his first Dixieland jazz 78 rpm record in 1950. During the late ‘50s, his father landed a job in Iran and Miller began to develop a lifelong interest in Persian and Eastern music forms, learning to play a vast array of traditional ethnic instruments from across Asia and the Middle East.   Miller has since been a vocal ambassador for preserving the traditions of many forms of Eastern music. In recent years, his mid-‘60s album ‘Oriental Jazz’ has become a collector’s favourite and the UK’s Jazzman label have issued a compilation, ‘A Lifetime In Oriental Jazz’, covering work from across his career. The renewed interest in his music has spawned this new collaboration with The Heliocentrics, a freeform mix of Eastern arrangements, jazz and angular psychedelics and represents the Heliocentrics’ most accomplished work to date. Tracks include the reflective, yearning ‘Spirit Jazz’, a new version of Miller classic ‘Massom’ and the cinematic ‘Electricone’. Well Recommended!

Clubroot’s first ever 12-inch release is a limited-press three-track EP comprising ‘Solar Flares’, ‘Chamber’ and ‘Remember Me’, tunes which first appeared on the bonus disc of the now-sold-out deluxe CD version of ‘II – MMX’.   Always intended as a separate entity from the carefully paced and structured album, this EP stands alone as another bright beacon along the path set by Clubroot, although owners of the LP edition of ‘II – MMX’ will be pleased to note that the slightly-oversized vinyl jacket was made to neatly house this supplemental release.

Collating the works on a double CD entitled ‘Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound’, the album is a celebration of Cuba’s freshest musical talent from Latin, Afro jazz and fusion to hip hop, funk, reggaeton and R&B, featuring contributions from Gilles’ favourite new discoveries. Brand new talent such as vocalist Danay and Doble Filo, in addition to international award-winning artists such as rapper Kumar and, of course, pianist Roberto Fonseca.   With Gilles living as much in the electronic/dance scene as in the jazz world, the decision to commission remixes of these session tracks was an easy one. Consolidating the numerous parts was by no means as straightforward, nor indeed was settling on our preferred remixers to coax the spirit of the Egrem session into the club. In the end, we settled on a squad of big-hitting producers that we trusted to do justice to the original jams: the likes of Louie Vega, MJ Cole, 4hero, Carl Cox, Rainer Trüby, Gotan Project’s Philippe Cohen Solal, Seiji, Michel Cleis and Mocky. All veterans of the Worldwide underground and all equipped with the skills and experience to flip Havana Cultura onto a another level. And of course, in order to maximise the Cuban flavour, we cut DJ Wichy and Doble Filo loose on their favourites from the album, with awesome results.   CD02 in the Havana Cultura Remixed package boasts a bonus DJ mix courtesy of Gilles himself that neatly weaves together the disparate threads that make up a typical Peterson DJ set. Madlib follows ‘Brain Wreck Show’ with the seventh installment of the Medicine Show series; a jazz album with Yesterdays New Quintet. While Madlib’s prolific recorded output always runs the gamut of styles, he often returns to recurrent themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base (or bases). Jazz is one such base.   This year, he’s already released two albums from spin-off “bands” that he first introduced on 2007’s ‘Yesterdays Universe’ album by Yesterday’s New Quintet. With ‘High Jazz’, Madlib begins anew, offering familiar jazz sounds from a series of “new” groups from his ever-dividing mental cosmos. ‘High Jazz’ - the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976 - shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft. Every element of jazz is there. Is that tune modal-funk? Was that song psych-fusion? Was that a bossa-tinged run or another kind of latin-affair? Where did that sitar come from? Madlib’s Yesterdays-excursions are never easy to categorize and that’s the point – while experiencing chops like these, the desire to rigidly define takes a back seat to aural pleasure. Top class repress of Asso’s Italo funk masterpiece from 1983. Featuring Do It Again, a killer Italo / Balearic disco-style cover of the Steely Dan classic. On the flip side you get the wonderful Don’t Stop, a track which is pure blissed-out dancefloor heaven and deservedly became a Loft and Garage classic as well as receiving heavy rotation on both the Cosmic and Balearic scenes. With the coolest of laid-back jazzy piano grooves underpinned with driving funky squelching bass and superb syncopated drums, this beautiful record is well worth the high prices paid when it turns up on the internet. Snap up a copy of this limited repress while you can!  

Alexis Le-Fan and Allo Rodolphe are aliases for two Parisian clowns responsible for excavating some of the deepest nuggets in France. These cuts were specifically geared for the close-at-hand warm weather. The A side is just simply amazing, an ultra rarity with rapping children vocals in French and Arabic and mesmerizing Eastern synth noodling. The B side’s two cuts are both uptempo psych jams of the highest quality, one with a chunky raw beat and high pitched soulful vox, the other with a nice piano and whimsical vocal over handclaps and flutes. Possibly the most exciting release in the Blackdisco series to date! And as usual, no repress… so don’t sleep!

Rumour is Noa Siano is actually one of our favourite deep house producers at the minute, Motor city Drum Ensemble.  That's just rumour though. Noa Siano who ever the flip is good, ‘Track For Lyn’ is an overwhelming experience of diva vocals fused with gritty House beats.   The pair of tunes on the B-Side is also brimming with a rough analog sound that can be as soothing as a lullaby to some. ‘Deep Down’ puts this to work through battering snare hits, soulful vocals once again and the sound of modern electronics used in comfortingly soulful manner. ‘Kwani’ delves even deeper into the roots of Soul. Way back across the ocean, from where it originally came from. Chants, congas and wood-like percussion is what we mean here.

Straight out of Bogota Colombia, Frente Cumbiero makes their debut vinyl release with two thumping original Cumbias that are sure to set dance floors on fire.   Pitchito is an uptempo scorcher with a healthy dose of sparkling synth work and rattling percussion, finding its groove somewhere between Lonnie Liston Smith and golden era-Fuentes.   Ananas Tornillo proves again why Frente Cumbiero is on the forefront of the Nueva Cumbia movement in Colombia, pairing an intoxicating keyboard hook with a biting bass line, freshly squeezed and served along the Andean Countryside.

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is back with a couple of low-slung tropical bubblers aimed straight at your summer barbecues and block parties.   'Cumbia Kikuchi' crackles with a hypnotic horn line and pawn shop synths, chugging along relentlessly like a Peruvian space cowboy on mellow coca leaves.   'Regresar A Cali' nods to lowriding funksters in both the Colombian city and its American namesake a bit further up the Pacific coast, playing kinda ruff with a Zapp-esque synbass that tangles with tropical guitar and percussion.  

Strut conclude their essential three-part excursion into the archives of South African music with the third and final volume of the ‘Next Stop… Soweto’ series.   Volume 3 is a long overdue retrospective of the rich jazz scene happening in South Africa from the early ‘60s to mid-‘80s. While many major artists lived in exile abroad and furthered their careers globally, many of South Africa’s finest jazz players remained, performing under the strict auspices of the Separate Amenities Act.   Jazz has a deep heritage in South Africa, dating from the early 20th Century. The country’s jazz scene flourished during the ‘50s, despite the increasing restrictions of apartheid, with musicians like the Jazz Epistles and Chris McGregor influenced by Charlie Parker & Duke Ellington before adding local marabi and kwela to their be bop. During the ‘60s, the Sharpville Massacre, radio restrictions and police clampdowns made the life of a black musician often untenable. Major names like Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba left to live abroad.   Next Stop Soweto Vol. 3 is the story of the music that survived in South Africa during this mid-‘60s to mid-‘80s era. The album features many of the recognised South African jazz greats like saxophonist Dudu Pukwana and drummer Early Mabuza, the potent soul jazz grooves of The Heshoo Beshoo Group and The Drive and some of the many artists creating unique fusions like Philip Tabane’s Malombo mixing African drums and hand percussion with guitar, vocal and flute. This is important music, a defiant statement in the face of unimaginable cultural repression.   The album features an unreleased track, Dollar Brand’s ‘Next Stop Soweto’ from the archives of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. As with previous volumes, the package features rare photos from the ‘60s and ‘70s with sleeve notes by South Africa’s finest author on music and culture, Gwen Ansell. The compilers of the series are Duncan Brooker and Francis Gooding.  

This is the second volume of the fantastic Spatial Disco series! Volume two focuses on the music produced by freaky electronics guru Sauveur Mallia between 1981 to 1984 in particular library albums  "Cosmosynthetic", "Percussions Modernes" and "Automation" from the legendary TELE MUSIC label!  After the hype about the cult disco album "Arpadys" Sauveur Mallia needs no introduction!
