Picking up where 2006’s ‘A Smile Is A Curve That Straightens Most Things’ left off, the riotously ebullient new album from Bass Clef doesn’t just build upon, but multiplies, amplifies and expands the sound of that first full length outing.

Starting with the same raw material of bass and beats assembled on four-track cassette (it was good enough for Lee Perry), Bass Clef has stepped beyond E8 city limits and into the studio to add African-ist percussion, This Heat-style drum freak-outs, and the usual riot of trombone, Theremin and cowbell familiar to anyone who has experienced Bass Clef live … and following his storming main-stage performance at Sonar as part of this year’s Radio One showcase, that now includes several million repeat-broadcast-exposed UK listeners.

‘Promises’ and ‘Kiss Me’ extract memories and desires and turn them into eye contact, like lovers’ rock and dub dread meeting at midnight on Mare Street. ‘May The Bridges…’ still bristles and twitches in the echo chamber of Bass Clef’s characteristic “dubstep (not dubstep)”, but this new LP defines a darker, wider, scarier, and altogether bigger space. Arcs of UK roots street music lurk in the corners, as on-u sounds travel along blue lines in search of original pirate material echoing from a haunted dancehall, but most significantly, all those bridges have been burned. Follow the Bass Clef lamp deep into the night… with eyes open or shut, it will glow.

It has been remastered and expanded, no less than five bonus tracks have been added to the original eight on the album. These include flipside tracks from single Mickey Way, an ultra rare remix of Bootsy by Robert Racic (previously only available though Factory Australasia) and The Runner, issued on a limited edition Italian EP!

Another killer 12" from Hemlock!

'Beacon' is possibly the most minimal tune to date by either artist, Beacon rolls on a bare bones set-up of deep swung bass, barely-there percussion and simple bleep-track melody. In the true spirit of the original dubstep pioneers, making very little, sound very BIG.

Mount Kimbie deliver a stunning remix. Layering a heap of their trademark melody onto the intro, following that with an instantly memorable rave hook, then easing us out gently with some sweeeet R&B inflected chopped vocals. Stunning stuff.

This is the highly anticipated release of ‘5’, a 32 track double CD marking Hyperdub’s five years of life as a record label. Honouring past, present and future in equal measure, ‘5’ is comprised of one disc of prior highlights, and one of freshly-composed material contributed by Hyperdub artists and close friends!

The first disc contains 16 brand new compositions from a heavyweight line-up which includes Burial, Cooly G, Darkstar, Flying Lotus, Ikonika, Joker & Ginz, King Midas Sound, Kode9 & The Spaceape, Mala, Martyn, and Zomby!! The second disc features 16 key tunes from the Hyperdub back catalogue, many making their first ever appearance on CD and long since sold out of their original 12” vinyl versions. Also included is Kode9 & The Spaceape’s previously-download-only ‘Fukkaz’, and their semi-legendary unreleased reading of ‘Ghost Town’, in which The Specials’ anthemic lament is given a similar deconstructed bass treatment as that inflicted upon Prince’s ‘Sign O’ The Times’ to such dramatic and remarkable effect on the label’s debut release in 2004.
After half a decade of consistent artistic and commercial success for all Hyperdub’s releases, there is little need in these pages to talk up the import of their influence upon the current electronic music landscape - we can leave that in the hands of the denizens of the international print & web press, who have been fulsome indeed in their aniticpation of ‘5’ right from the moment the project was first announced.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Timesless Ra classic gets well deserved reissue! 'On Jupiter' sounds unique to any other album Sun Ra has made. The arkestra reflects a disco pulse right back on its itself, and delivers one of the most cohesiv albums of their career. The title track is a masterpiece of gentle atonal harmony, while 'UFO' pushes along at a cracking disco-ish pace with fierce bass and spacey dub effects!!!! A well recommended gem!

This AMAZING cosmic deep space jazz gem is now been reissued on Kindred Spirits pressed on heavy 180gram vinyl in a new thick cardboard sleeve!

Phenomenal live date recorded in Italy in 1978 with a quartet line-up that allows John Gilmore, Michael Ray and Luqman Ali the space to improvise and solo more extensively than with the full Arkestra. The result is an astounding synergy of individual virtuosity and group interplay, but it's the man himself who arguably steals the show with the rhythmic atmospherics of "Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens".
