'Come around' is a sexy old-skool sounding garage number with sweet vocal samples, broken percussion and punchy sub-bass. On 'I Could Be There' - the hard sturdy drums and upfront bass carry chrome-plated chords and yearning vocal loops straight to the heart of the dancefloor.  Exotic delightful little number 'Cactus Banger' has African Kwaito house-inspired rhythm, chunky bass and oddball flute action.

'Carina' rips its drums from A Certain Ratio for full funky post-punk effect, building padded electronics around the sharp post-punk elements for a deep, break-driven trip sounding something like a classic Carl Craig joint, all off-centre rhythms and hypnotic melodies.   The rest of the EP delves into aspects of afrobeat, dub & electronica, pushing the template of house & techno beyond a 4/4 simplicity, and the ever-reliable October delivers a deeper than deep take on the title track. Tip.

Eunice Davis’ super slinky - and super risqué - vocals combine with a stuttering, off-kilter rhythm on this great and totally unique number cut in the mid-50s for the Deluxe subsidiary of King records. At the time, the talented Davis was working as one half of an in-house writing team for King, with Lowman ‘El’ Pauling, but she had also led a slew of releases herself, signing off her career with the regional hit, ‘Rock Little Daddy’ for Derby Records in New York. ‘Get Your Enjoys’ was sadly to be the only release for Deluxe and her career drifted into local obscurity soon after.   On the flip is ’Go To Work Pretty Daddy’, another transparently lewd ditty set to a brash, big city Jump Blues backing, this from Eunice Davis’ sole release for the Atlantic label.

The fourth solo album from Burnt Friedman on Nonplace!   Deep, percussive, hollow-sounding off-kilter instrumentation throughout the majority of ten instrumental tracks on BokoBoko, playing prepared oil barrels/steel drums, all kinds of wood and metal percussion, gongs, monochord, a home-made rubber-band guitar, organ, synthesizer, and electric guitar.

Following on from Cherrystones release comes this four track EP from Japanese mutant punk crew EP-4 on Brutal Music.   A seamless mix of polyrhythmic arrangements that varyingly nods in the direction of the 80's downtown NY via concise Liquid Liquid grooves or the elaborately funky arrangements of Talking Heads. Building on a cool, nosweat-funk danceability, the group explores areas of sonically drenched experimentation. Skeletal grooves take on swelling layers of compressed and distorted guitar, synth, and vocoder. The vocals are distinctly post-Can and desolate in a P.I.L-damaged sense.

Muro sets off 2012 with a follow up to his great Super Funky Jazz Breaks mix from last year. As you'd expect it's all-the-way across the jazz board: Lord Finesse samples, jazz-funk cuts, soundtrack stuff, drum breaks, wailing saxes, Afro percussion, Andy Bey vocals and everything in between. Not much CTI or Blue Note to be had - kind of deeper. No tracklist!

The first one was brilliant and this definitely lives up to its predecessor.   A glorious mix; stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and Flamenco folk music.   The music on here was created when a cultural and political revolution taking place.  In the US, artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war.

This film is the bomb!   An amazing new documentary tracing the history of the first Rasta (Leonard Howell) and the setting up of the Pinnacle rastafarian encampment (some of the remaining last survivors are interviewed).   Filmed in Jamaica with music and interviews with Bunny Lee, Max Romeo, The Abyssinians, Count Ossie's Drummers, Bongo Herman and more - this is a seriously excellent documentary. Looks good, the music is awesome - roots rastafari music in natural settings, the research and integrity of the film fabulous.   The film is directed by Helen Lee and based on her earlier book of the same name.   English version with French/Jamaican/English/Spanish   The bomb!

Going far beyond the standard imagery of Rasta - ganja, reggae, and dreadlocks - this cultural history offers an uncensored vision of a movement with complex roots and the exceptional journey of a man who taught an enslaved people how to be proud and impose their culture on the world. In the 1920s Leonard Percival Howell and the First Rastas had a revelation concerning the divinity of Haile Selassie, king of Ethiopia, that established the vision for the most popular mystical movement of the 20th century, Rastafarianism. Although jailed, ridiculed, and treated as insane, Howell, also known as the Gong, established a Rasta community of 4,500 members, the first agro-industrial enterprise devoted to producing marijuana.In the late 1950s the community was dispersed, disseminating Rasta teachings throughout the ghettos of the island. A young singer named Bob Marley adopted Howell's message, and through Marley's visions, reggae made its explosion in the music world.

Magnificent new single from genre-bending expermentalist Bullion on R&S!   On 'Say Arr Ee' Bullion replaces what would have previously been samples with himself, his own vocals and instruments. Showcasing a wide range of musical influences; leftfield disco, reggae to hints of exotica and jazz can be heard on 'Say Arr Ee', definitely one of his best to date, and you can dance to it too! 'What Does She Know', is a hazy Eno-inspired killer.

The West coast producer/emcees The Alchemist and Oh No release their second grimy Gangrene collaboration. Vodka & Ayahausca, is a follow-up to last year's gritty debut Gutter Water.   Both Al &Oh again split their time between composing dense, sample-based landscapes micro-dotted with tales of psychotropia.   The album boasts choice co-pilots; Kool G Rap goes in on "Gladiator Music", Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) unloads on the lead single "Dump Truck" and the appropriately dilated ally Evidence joins Roc C on the heavy-lidded, "Dark Shades". In addition, Greneberg EP collaborator Roc Marciano laces the suggestive "Drink Up", a welcome addition to the kaleidoscopic head-trip.

The 30th anniversary re-issue of this legendary early eighties German electronic/proto-techno album by Manuel Gottsching!   Göttsching was a member of experimental Krautrock group Ash Ra Tempel.  'E2-E4' revolutionised modern dance music at the time and continues to innovate to this day.  Considered to be one of the most sampled and remixed albums of the 20th Century and influential across the house, techno, electronica and prog rock scenes. Notably, massively influencing many from Detroit Techno music, from Carl Craig, Juan Atkins to Derrick May. Larry Levan used to close his legendary Paradise Garage sets in New York with this and even insisted on E2-E4 to be played at his funeral.   A MUST HAVE ALBUM!!!
